General-Elimination Harmony and the Meaning of the Logical Constants

چکیده

Inferentialism claims that expressions are meaningful by virtue of rules governing their use. In particular, logical expressions are autonomous if given meaning by their introduction-rules, rules specifying the grounds for assertion of propositions containing them. If the elimination-rules do no more, and no less, than is justified by the introduction-rules, the rules satisfy what Prawitz, following Lorenzen, called an inversion principle. This connection between rules leads to a general form of elimination-rule, and when the rules have this form, they may be said to exhibit “general-elimination” harmony. Ge-harmony ensures that the meaning of a logical expression is clearly visible in its I-rule, and that the Iand E-rules are coherent, in encapsulating the same meaning. However, it does not ensure that the resulting logical system is normalizable, nor that it satisfies the conservative extension property, nor that it is consistent. Thus harmony should not be identified with any of these notions.

Harmonic Inferentialism and the Logic of Identity

Inferentialism claims that the rules for the use of an expression express its meaning without any need to invoke meanings or denotations for them. Logical inferentialism endorses inferentialism specifically for the logical constants. Harmonic inferentialism, as the term is introduced here, usually but not necessarily a subbranch of logical inferentialism, follows Gentzen in proposing that it is...

Some Remarks on Proof-Theoretic Semantics

This is a tripartite work. The first part is a brief discussion of what it is to be a logical constant, rejecting a view that allows a particular self-referential “constant” • to be such a thing in favour of a view that leads to strong normalisation results. The second part is a commentary on the flattened version of Modus Ponens, and its relationship with rules of type theory. The third part i...

Prior’s Tonk and Proof-Theoretic Harmony

Arthur Prior’s logical connective “tonk” [3] has given rise to a number of debates on the nature of logical constants, making it compelling to explicate criteria to exclude pathological connectives, such as tonk, from genuine logical constants. In his seminal paper [2], William Lawvere proposed to understand logical constants as adjoint functors, giving rise to the discipline of categorical (or...

Proof-Theoretic Semantics, a Problem with Negation and Prospects for Modality

This paper discusses proof-theoretic semantics, the project of specifying the meanings of the logical constants in terms of rules of inference governing them. I concentrate on Michael Dummett’s and Dag Prawitz’ philosophical motivations and give precise characterisations of the crucial notions of harmony and stability, placed in the context of proving normalisation results in systems of natural...

A proof-theoretic universal property of determiners

Determiners are the natural language (NL) analogue of quantifiers in logic. In model-theoretic semantics (MTS), their denotations are taken as binary relation over subsets of the domain of the model (see [3] for an extensive discussion). When combined with a noun-meaning, a subset of the domain, they give rise to determiner phrase (dp), which, according to the generalised quantifiers theory [1]...
